Laminitis (cont'd)

Laminitis "stress triggers" may include:

  • High carbohydrate diets (very high risk)
  • Boarding on any green pasture (high risk)
  • Feed supplements, whether conventional or "holistic" (high risk)
  • Invasive trimming methods (medium to very high risk)
  • Vaccinations (medium to high risk)
  • Parasiticides (medium to high risk)
  • Horseshoes (medium to high risk)
  • Close confinement (medium to high risk)

Overweight and heavy horses are often targeted as "high risk" for founder. As are horses ridden barefoot. Pregnant mares are also cited as high risk. So are ponies. The list goes on. But most of this, unqualified, is nonsense. It isn't the horse. It is what we are doing to him. It is our management practices entirely that are at fault. My program corrects these.

If you feel you have an emergency, use my consultation service (see menu). Using my holistic practices, most severe cases can be turned around fairly quickly. They can mean the difference between life and death. Chronic cases with extreme capsule deformity will take longer. Acute cases, ignoring holistic practices, may end up in death from shock, starvation, or Euthanasia. If your horse is laying down repeatedly to escape pain, developing body sores, losing weight, has hooves that are abscessing or are hot to the touch or are changing (or have changed) into deformed shapes, we have an emergency. I prefer that you confirm these symptoms first with you vet, who will provide a legal diagnosis, and whom we will need help from during the process.
